Polymer Properties Applications
EPDM rubber Excellent UV resistance, good high temperature resistance. Mudflaps, external seals, gaskets and other products, tyres.
Nitrile rubber Excellent resistance to fuel and oil, sometimes alloyed with other polymers eg. flexible PVC. Petrol hoses, oil pump seals and gaskets, work-boot soles.
Neoprene Very chemical resistant, rubbery. Shoe soles, Hoses, Radiator hoses, Wetsuits.
Nylon Strong, tough, durable, high load-wear capability and stretch, susceptible to moisture absorption Pulleys, industrial wheels, wear parts, hydraulic tubing
Polyacrylonitrile Resinous, fibrous, or rubbery, combines with Butadiene and Styrene to form hard, tough ABS copolymer. ABS plumbing pipe, structural panels, kettle handles, housewares; Orlon® fabric.
Polychloro-trifluoroethylene Can be molded by extrusion, chemically resistant. Gaskets, linings for containers, parts for valves and pumps.
Polyethylene
(High-Density ) HDPE
Low friction coefficient, high wear resistance, easily formed, machined, and recycled. Can be easily formed into lightweight containers milk, water, and juice containers; toys, liquid detergent bottles.
Polyethylene
(Low-Density) LDPE
Softer grade, exceptional stretch, often alloyed with other polymers for added properties. Can be stretched into fine, tough, films bread bags, frozen food bags, grocery bags.
Polyethylene terephthalate
(PET, PETG)
Strong, easily moldable, chemically resistant, light-weight. Soft drink bottles, peanut butter jars, salad dressing bottles, nonbreakable bottles.
Polystyrene Resists attack by acids, alkalis and many solvents, low water absorption, excellent electrical insulator, high clarity (unfoamed). Styrofoam® cups, grocery store meat trays, fast-food sandwich containers, video cassette cases, compact disk jackets, cafeteria trays, refrigerator insulation.
Polysulfone Tough, strong, stiff, chemically and thermally resistant Household and plumbing items, various automotive parts, wire coatings.
Polytetrafluoro-ethylene
(PTFE)
Extremely low friction coefficient, chemically and heat resistant, often compounded for improved properties
  • Viton® : gaskets, bearings, linings for containers and pipes.
  • Teflon® : non-stick cookware, cooking utensils, pump valves, plumbing tape.
Polyurethane Highly elastic, tough, hard-wearing, flexible or rigid, solid and foam.
  • Forklift wheels, high impact engineering parts
  • Flexible foams: furniture padding, mattresses
  • Rigid foams: cores for airplane wings
  • Hard films: polyurethane varnishes
Polyvinyl chloride Low cost, exceptional electrical insulator, good weatherability, high strength, rigid or flexible.
  • Unplasticized form: water pipe, plumbing fittings, phonograph records, synthetic floor tiles, credit cards
  • Plasticized form: raincoats, shower curtains, and packaging films.
Polyvinyl fluoride Resistant to attack by chemicals or by weathering. Protective films for: building sidings, pipes, corrosive chemical containers
Acetal Exceptional impact resistance, easily machined, autoclavable, low water absorption. Medical devices, machine parts, high pressure hose fittings.
Acrylic High clarity, good impact resistance, excellent weatherability. Point of Sale display stands, skylight covers, teller windows.
Polycarbonate Excellent impact resistance, high clarity, good UV resistance. Non-shatter glass, pergola roofing, machine guards, face shields, barriers)
